Travel writers were responsible for the widespread dissemination of colonial representations of landscape. But it was the work of academic geographers during the German colonial period (1884–1919) that elevated landscape to the status of a scientific concept. After the “loss” of the German colonies, colonial landscape representations lost their significance. The colonial geography now differentiated into various perspectives and specializations. In the following decades, the landscape was displaced by the region as the central spatial category in non-European world regions. However, even during the time of German colonial rule, landscape concepts and regional ideas had influenced each other.
