‘Landscape Architecture’ as a specific profession and professional discipline encounters in practice and theory in the form of the three sub-disciplines: Landscape Planning, Open Space Planning, and Landscape Architecture—in the narrower sense of a design discipline. Although ‘landscape’ is included in the discipline’s name, it remains unclear how the three disciplines belong together despite a differentiated task spectrum. A look at the history of the subject with its origins in literary topoi, landscape images, garden art, the beautification of the countryside, and the ‘landscape stewardship’ outlines the historical and systematic backgrounds of the tripartite division and provides clues to a possible integration.
