Sexual violence places a heavy burden on society. Survivors experience a range of long-term impacts, such as an increased likelihood of physical and mental health problems. There is an economic burden as well, with some calculating the financial costs to amount to just under $10 billion annually solely within the United States. In response, public health policy has been employed to curb the frequency and severity of sexual violence. This chapter explores those policies and their efficacy. The authors argue that, while these tertiary policies have been adopted with the best of intentions, the evidence-base has not supported the current approach in proportion to its fiscal investment. Instead, seemingly highly effective primary and secondary level interventions may have been overlooked in exchange for intervention focusing solely on perpetrators after abuse has already occurred. An alternative approach will be recommended, one that broadens the scope of employed solutions.
