This chapter discusses James Robertson’s novel And the Land Lay Still. After tracing the large number of dysfunctional and broken family constellations which run parallel to the depiction of Scotland as a dependent and disunited nation after the 1979 devolution referendum, I reconstruct the novel’s ritual and therapeutic aspects which are evoked by its strong sense of community, patchwork families and a version of national identity which is welcoming and inclusive.
