From Mr Macrae’s garnered facts it would seem that the belief in second sight—or, to be more particular, “the” second sight—began about the middle of the seventeenth century, and existed as a practical belief for some two centuries. Up to to-day the belief exists, but rather of a thing that is possible and has been than which is. Indeed, it would almost seem as if at various times there were fashions in the “art,” as it is more than once called. So also are the various limitations of degree. It is, after all, only natural that in the case of a subject so purely conjectural and indeterminate the demarking lines should be vague.
