In 1883, when the Lyceum company were crossing to America, on the City of Rome, a bragging fellow, seeing so many landsmen present, not like himself in yachting rig, pulled out a ten-pound note, and openly offered to bet that on one of the passengers would take his cap off the top of the mast. Mr. Terriss instantly covered the note, and throwing off his coat, tightened his belt. “Done,” he said; “up with you, and put it on. I will follow and take it off.” The offer was withdrawn.
