[A Witty Reply]
摘要
An enterprising gentleman, who is evidently a keen stickler for realism, but who has, at the same time, an eye to the main chance, recently wrote to Mr. Henry Irving suggesting the unreality of the scene in which King Henry VIII. kisses the property infant Elizabeth at the font. With sublime unselfishness, and with consent of his wife, he offered his own live child for the Royal salute. “My wife,” wrote this devoted student of art, “thinks she has a chance of bringing grist to the mill, and herewith I offer, on her behalf, the hire of our real baby for the purpose of personating the King’s offspring.”
