Food Security Through Entomophagy: The Benefits and Challenges of Harvesting Encosternum Delegorguei in Climate-Change-Affected Rural Nerumedzo Community, Bikita, Zimbabwe

Insect consumption (Entomophagy) is an undermined source of livelihood though it offers food and potential income that could cushion communities if harvested in sufficient quantities. Determining the benefits and challenges of such an alternative livelihood is essential as it provides insight on how the livelihood could effectively promote food security. This study sought to examine the benefits and challenges of harvesting Encosternum delegorguei (Harurwa). The study was carried out in Nerumedzo village of Bikita District, Zimbabwe. A survey research strategy, and a mixed approach were adopted. In-depth interviews and non-participant observations were the qualitative approaches utilized to gather data, and a survey questionnaire was used to obtain quantitative data. For qualitative data, purposive sampling was employed, while random sampling was used for quantitative data. The researcher used the list of registered Encosternum delegorguei (Harurwa) insect harvesting households and selected 40 households at random for the sample. Microsoft Excel was used to analyse quantitative data, and thematic analysis was used to analyse qualitative data. In this chapter, the key themes discussed are the benefits acquired from harvesting Harurwa insects, challenges encountered in harvesting and marketing the insects. The results showed that, given their economic potential, harvesting Harurwa insects could assist households increase their income and food security. The findings imply that collecting insects can be a useful adjunct strategy to increase community resilience and food security as well as promoting the protection of the environment. The chapter recommends communities to consider entomophagy as an alternative strategy since the benefits of collecting insects significantly outweigh the challenges.
