The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are seen as universal standards of global development. However, the increased vulnerability of the small island developing states (SIDS) of the Caribbean makes the realization of the SDGs an almost impossible objective. The challenges which are faced by the SIDS of the Caribbean include resource limitations, mobility obstacles, and sensitive economic relationships between the environment and livelihoods. Also, there is a need to interrogate the role of the SDGs in further perpetuating narratives of political inequity by using barometers of development set in unattainable standards. The inherent challenges associated with achieving the SDGs are only compounded by the significant threats posed by climate change. The struggle for states in achieving SDGs, while at the same time confronting climate change threats, places Caribbean SIDS in a most dire situation which requires urgent collective action. This paper will explore the practical reality of global boiling on SIDS in the Caribbean, paying particular attention to the impact on resources, human rights, and the economy. There will also be a frontal discussion of the negative consequences of the SDGs on development in the Caribbean region vis-à-vis the international community. Recommendations will be made for the creation of a developmental tool or modifications to the SDGs, which can better address the practical realities of the SIDS in the Caribbean.
