Overview What is a “good map”? The introduction of this book emphasized that the map primarily represents an interface between the environment and humans. Therefore, “good” or “bad” maps differ in whether or how well they fulfill this interface function or other functions assigned to them. To be able to evaluate the achievement of this goal, the terms usability and user experience are introduced in the following (Sect. 3.1). Subsequently, various influencing factors on usability are examined in more detail. These are user- and task-specific as well as cognitive-psychological factors (Sect. 3.2 to 3.4). For better understanding, these are presented one after the other here, although they are closely linked in practice and are supplemented by further conditions (summarized under the term “context”) (Fig. 3.1). Based on this framework, selected, concrete methods for evaluating usability are presented in Chap. 4 .
