At first glance, globes are a good model for depicting the Earth, as their curved surface hardly distorts distances, areas and angles. From a practical point of view, however, flat maps are more suitable: They are easier to transport, more cost-effective, allow large-scale representations for small sections of the Earth and enable simple measurements.
