The purpose of this chapter is to highlight the changing landscape in health care delivery as they are relevant to workflow research and discuss recent developments in workflow methodology and theory. We discussed four recently developed theoretical frameworks: (1) Sociotechnical EHR workaround analysis, (2) Conceptual model of health IT workflow integration, (3) Conceptual model of shared health informatics for tracking chronic illness management and (4) Conceptual model of the integration of EHR and patient-generated health data (PGHD) with impact on clinician burnout. The methodological advances that we summarized are Real Time Locating Systems, Visual Analytics, Workflow Monitoring, Process Mining, Network Analysis. Recent trends suggest that future workflow methodologies and conceptual frameworks will be more data intensive. Diverse data resources should be harmonized to be able study workflow to identify patterns and variations in a reliable and valid way. Sensitivity to context is also critical particularly in care delivery.
