Application of GenAI in Clinical Administration Support

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has made revolutionary changes across many fields especially healthcare. There are various aspects of healthcare that can leverage this powerful technology to improve. Clinicians often dedicate a lot of time to exhaustive routine tasks that are essential and at the same time take away from their ability to provide personalized patient care. These time-consuming tasks involve managing electronic healthcare records (EHRs), note-taking and documentation, data gathering and summarization, and medical coding. A lot of these tasks can be partially or completely automated to reduce administrative burden and help clinicians to focus on more important aspects of healthcare. GenAI as a family of models that are capable of generating data in many forms, are well-suited for various tasks in clinical administration support. In this chapter, we will explore specific use cases of GenAI in clinical administration, and discuss the potential benefits and challenges of implementing these models in clinical settings. Additionally, we highlight previous studies, which have proposed innovative approaches for leveraging GenAI to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of clinical workflows. It is critical to acknowledge the potential limitations and risks inherent in deploying these systems and using them in real-world scenarios. The successful implementation of GenAI in healthcare requires careful consideration of ethical implications, potential biases, or interpretability issues that might hinder safe and accurate service delivery. GenAI can address time-consuming administrative tasks as a major contributor to clinician’s job dissatisfaction to mitigate burnout. It can effectively help the medical system to provide good quality service for patients by allowing clinicians to spend more time on patient care.
