This chapter presents general information about Montenegro and a brief retrospective of soil research activities in Montenegro. The first steps in soil investigations date back to the third decade of the twentieth century and primarily focus on soil improvement on agricultural land. The State Experimental Station for Southern Crops was the only institution conducting soil analyses at that time. After the break during Second World War (WWII), soil science activities in Montenegro intensified. The pedological laboratory in BarBar was reconstructed, and the research was devoted to areas where amelioration and other agrotechnical measures were required to intensify agricultural production. This chapter further presents the pioneers of soil science in Montenegro, research institutions, and soil-related activities, as well as the steps passed in the creation of the Soil Map of Montenegro. It highlights the role of the Institute of Agriculture from PodgoricaPodgorica, which was a predecessor of the Biotechnical Faculty today—the leading institution in the biotechnical sciences in Montenegro.

This chapter presents general information about Montenegro and a brief retrospective of soil research activities in Montenegro.
