This chapter addresses concerns about over-reliance on technology in education by advancing a humanistic approach to artificial intelligence in education (AIED). It introduces Abel, an AI tutor that integrates Jerome Bruner’s maxim of “going beyond the information given” with affective awareness to foster agency. Abel uses a multimodal, machine-learning approach to monitor emotional states and five phases of subjective understanding, facilitating knowledge-building across diverse tasks. Through targeted interventions—such as attentional scaling, Socratic questioning, and chunking—Abel provides tailored cognitive and affective support, fostering holistic development for students of all backgrounds and abilities. The chapter concludes with a reflection on the transformative potential of AI tutors like Abel within AIED.
