The Mid-German Crystalline Rise represents a local, strongly eroded high resulting from a tectonic stacking of metamorphic rocks at the northern margin of the Saxothuringian Zone. It differs from the adjacent area of the Saxothuringian Zone only by its exhumation history. The complex gravity and magnetic anomaly data reveal the heterogenic structure of the Mid-German Crystalline Rise, which is not a coherent structural unit but rather consists of various tectono-metamorphic units that differ in their provenance and tectonic setting. The convergence and collision between the Rhenohercynian Zone and the Saxothuringian Zone may have occurred through a combination of oblique collision, arc-shaped deformation of the orogen, and strike-slip displacements. The synkinematic granitoids intruded between 335 and 310 Ma discordant to the Variscan nappe stacking and crossed the metamorphic units of the Mid-German Crystalline Rise as well as the nappe stacking of the Southern Phyllite Zone and the Delitzsch–Torgau–Doberlug Syncline to the east of the Elbe.
