Operationalizing Urban Ecology and Circular Economy in Montreal’s South-West Neighborhoods Using an Interdisciplinary Approach

As a result of deindustrialization and insufficient proactive investments by governments, industrial wastelands on the edges of towns and cities are multiplying. These sites illustrate the instability of mono-functional zoning and inadequate city regulations to ensure long-term resilience, particularly evident along once-industrialized waterfronts like Montreal’s Lachine Canal. Since its closure to commercial navigation in 1974, the Lachine Canal’s programming has focused on recreational activities, largely neglecting infrastructure and adjacent industrial areas. However, these post-industrial areas present significant opportunities to rethink the city and create sustainable, resilient neighborhoods. In the context of climate change and resource depletion, rehabilitating both the under-used building stock and the largely vacant sites with mixed programming, appropriate density, and green infrastructure, can regenerate urban fabrics and the earth’s productive capacity. The post-industrial landscapes along the Lachine Canal possess several assets that the City of Montreal could leverage in its quest for resilience in the face of climate change, which it can achieve by leveraging industrial heritage, promoting urban biodiversity, and incorporating principles of circular economy, urban ecology and urban metabolism. This chapter documents an Action Research process focused on the sustainable redevelopment of neighborhoods along the Lachine Canal. It draws on interdisciplinary and inter-university research involving architecture, life cycle assessment, and construction engineering from three Montreal universities and builds upon previous inter-university endeavors going back to 2019. The approach highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the role of universities in promoting urban ecology and circular economy through collaborative research and demonstration projects. This interdisciplinary approach aims to bridge gaps in architectural and engineering education and fosters co-learning, contributing to the creation of resilient and sustainable urban environments.
