Revenge pornography was mentioned when discussing TikTok in Chap. 3 . The PTSD from being involved in pornography has been highlighted by multiple Netflix documentaries as explained in this chapter. The violence and abuse within the pornography industry lead to PTSD, but it takes people time to realise this and it is often only once people have left it. Functioning in a similar way to a cult, the industry normalises damaging behaviour but has adamant defenders. Receiving damage to your body while on camera constitutes pain in the moment, but having this filmed then repeatedly watched takes this to another level. This repetition of the moment of pain needs to be considered in terms of PTSD, plus the social normalising of its reception needs questioning. Framed as Sex Internal this chapter addresses the sections Pornography and Death and Beyond Mediated Fate and summarises the findings of this book. In one perspective online pornography addiction is part of PTSD, a symptom of PTSD being dissociation leading to this form of screen addiction. Those who have experienced child sexual abuse, veterans, and those with high PTSD have a greater risk of online addiction. On the other hand there are studies disproving the addiction model of pornography and arguing that it can be beneficial for relationships and stress. One study claimed to disprove the ‘damaged goods’ thesis, that is, those with child sexual abuse histories are more likely to enter the pornography industry their results showing there was no difference in terms of histories between those in the industry and those not.
