We have investigated PTSD from respective positions in relation to culture holding in mind a position that PTSD has been created through psychiatry and historically positioned in the DSM by psychoanalysts. These latter have a faith that the past always dictates and that which is denied will be repressed and returns with a vengeance. An interesting alternative reveals all attempts to claim the essence of PTSD through medicalised or pseudo-science terminology will be erroneous. Building on Deleuze and Guattari and their Body Without Organs there is a way of moving beyond such polarised positions. We have seen the relationship between trauma and place, and thus we go to a position beyond ‘after blood’ which comes to affect wider audiences, particularly media use which relates to social suffering. What we find is trauma is not a property of events, but an experiential category. This is addressed through analysis of Technotrauma in three sections: Trauma, Affect, and the Collective; Technology and Performativity; and PTSD and Postcolonialism.
