Chapter 10 explores the question: how does a climate model work? This exploration begins by defining a climate model as a numerical representation of the Earth’s climate system, based on laws of physics and chemistry. The variations in climate model complexity are described, as well as the range of uses for both simpler and more complex climate models. The accuracy of any climate model’s output is evaluated by comparing that output with observed climate data. Once the accuracy of a climate model has been verified, that model can be run for different inputs, such as different atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations, to provide valuable predictions about likely future climate conditions. The average of the predictions from multiple models generally is a stronger scientific result than the prediction from any single model.

摘要
