In this chapter, Bruce Cohen (editor of The Politics of Mental Health and Illness book series) briefly reflects on the significance of the Social Production of Mental Health research community in Australasia and some of the key themes and issues arising from the Critical Mental Health in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand: Social and Historical Perspectives volume. In doing so, he touches on the importance of Mad Studies, discusses the myth of ‘silos’ in the academy, and offers his own conception of what unites the current authors in thinking critically about psychiatry and the mental health system in capitalist society.
