A less highlighted region in South America—the Guiana Shield—is studied. An analysis of the forest dynamics between 1985 and 2021, the main socioeconomic factors that are correlated with such dynamics, and the public policies that may have inhibited or stimulated the deforestation was performed. Based on the results, separate analysis per country coupled with a regional overview is done, considering patterns related to scale factors and national economic interests and drivers. Strengthening Sustainable Development in the region depends on solving border delimitation conflicts between neighboring countries; getting more social and economic equilibrium among countries, including the issues of Democracy and public policy stability; promoting more integrative regional policies, and coordinated actions between neighboring countries especially in their border zones.
