The current state of advancement of Central American nations needs to be intelligently managed to achieve the world’s sustainable development goals. However, many common challenges are hitting this region. This chapter focuses on the engagement of policymakers and researchers in the sustainability aspect of Central American countries, particularly with case studies in Panama. Thus, a background context with a brief theoretical framework is provided. Efforts of external support are highlighted. Then, local initiatives and efforts in Panama are presented as a case study, from which key points relevant at a regional level are pointed out. Lessons learned, limitations, and barriers indicate that the current policymaking process is government-driven instead of evidence-based, driven by research and academia.
