The region of Central Asia is experiencing significant challenges to sustainable development, exacerbated by a growing degree of uncertainty in the new normal economic, social, and political environment. The inherent problems acquire new facets, which require new approaches to implementing the national sustainable development agenda and meeting the parameters of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The study explores the country-level threats to sustainable development across five Central Asian states (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan), summarizes the progress of Central Asian countries in achieving SDGs in 2000–2022, and discusses how developing collaboration with China and Russia may reboot the sustainable development agenda in Central Asia.
