This chapter focuses on young people who have dropped out of school. After meeting these young people whose status as drop-outs was tantamount to a form of social relegation (comparable to “temporary second-class citizens”), the authors show how a system can lead to a struggle for recognition (Honneth)—whether this takes place with, outside or against the system—enabling them to avoid being trapped with marginalized status.
