Social Media: A Transformative Tool in Mathematics Education in the Twenty-First Century

The evolution of social media from telephone-based communication to the Internet has been characterised by an increasing emphasis on real-time interaction, visual content, and personalisation, reflecting the changing ways people connect and share information. In the last decade, social media has witnessed a significant shift in its aims and applications. Originally designed for online interaction and socialising, social media platforms have transformed into multifaceted tools that serve various purposes, including advertising, education, marketing, job searching, health and fitness, and more. The advancement of social media in education has been transformative, reshaping how teachers and students engage with content, collaborate, and share knowledge. In this chapter, we discuss the utilisation of some prominent social media platforms, namely TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp, X (Twitter), Facebook and ResearchGate within the context of mathematics education in the twenty-first century.
