This chapter gives an overview of popular 8-bit microprocessors in general and the PicoBlaze in particular. PicoBlaze is the most popular 8-bit softcore microprocessor from Xilinx that was designed by Ken Chapman. We will iteratively develop the PicoBlaze architectures adding more and more features as we analyze the PicoBlaze instruction set and its implementation in HDL.
