The concept of “thinking swarms” gives rise to several philosophical questions about the nature of this emerging technology. Philosophers have long considered the relationship between parts and wholes, of which the swarm is exemplary: a swarm comprises many parts, which can function by themselves, yet when they are put together, they form a new whole, namely, that of a swarm. In the history of philosophy, the part-whole concept has been scrutinised in many contexts. In this chapter, I provide a brief interpretation of a swarm through the lens of key philosophical positions (e.g. Plato, Aristotle, Descartes). I elaborate on Dooyeweerd, who distinguished between part-wholes and enkaptic interlacements when analysing concrete reality, such as birds and nests, marble and statue, heart and human body and state and citizen. This chapter encourages developers to think through how defining relationships in terms of part-wholes, or enkaptic interlacements, influence the theoretical functioning of the swarm, its technical design and possibly how the swarm may behave in its context of use, as the context evokes new relationships of a part-whole, whole-whole or enkaptic interlaced nature.
