Introducing the Human Dignity Gap
摘要
This chapter presents the concept of human dignity in healthy environments. This goal is a common interest of all people. The goal emphasizes that an individual’s living condition is determined by the values available to use and enjoy. For societies to promote human dignity widely and effectively, it is essential for them—citizens and leaders—to have the necessary knowledge and skills. However, challenges impede citizens’ and society’s potential accomplishments. We illustrate the concept of the human dignity gap or shortfall. This chapter makes the case that responsible citizens and leaders must strive to develop interventions to increase access to values for all humans. Given this, we present a problem-oriented accounting of our current situation and options to address the gap. We recommend instructing individuals in integrated problem-solving approaches, as illustrated throughout this book. Problem solving is an endless task. This chapter describes how an integrated problem approach can support citizens and leaders in narrowing the discrepancy or gap between our goals and the current state of the world. The concept of the common interest is explicated.
