In recent years, the role of fog computing has been remarkable in terms of supporting Internet of Things (IoT) applications by enabling the automation of real-life applications based on microservices. In a fog environment, IoT application services that are latency-sensitive and bandwidth-intensive are deployed in the presence of distributed, diversified and resource-limited devices at the network’s edge. An essential effective resource allocation strategy is needed to enhance the overall system outcome and to provide the application’s Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. However, looking for the perfect allocation strategy for placing microservices over distributed fog nodes while considering parameters involving multiple objective parameters is challenging and cannot be determined in polynomial time. Thus, it is considered as an NP-complete problem. This chapter briefly introduces fog computing, microservices’ role in fog computing, and how they are placed in a fog environment. We have discussed different objectives related to microservice placement. We expose several techniques, issues and challenges in microservice placement. Finally, we have discussed the scope of improvement in microservice deployment in the fog computing model.
