Organic farming is gaining global popularity as a response to the detrimental effects of chemical-based agriculture and the increasing challenges posed by climate change. The agricultural sector is actively seeking sustainable solutions to reduce carbon footprints by minimizing synthetic inputs and recycling farm resources. Organic farming presents a promising alternative, but its success hinges on the development of comprehensive production technologies. Key components for establishing a sustainable organic system include variety development, rapid nutrient availability through natural sources, and effective organic weed and pest management. Potatoes, a staple of the Indian diet, stand to benefit significantly from recent advancements in organic farming. States such as Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Assam offer substantial opportunities for the growth of organic potato farming. Over the past decade, research and development efforts have led to the creation of production technologies that achieve yields surpassing the national average, underscoring the viability of organic potato farming for sustainability. The shift towards organic farming is especially important in the context of climate change, which pressurizes the agricultural industry to adopt practices that reduce environmental impact. By minimizing synthetic products and focusing on resource recycling, organic farming can help mitigate carbon emissions and contribute to climate change mitigation. Although transitioning to organic systems presents challenges, it also offers a critical opportunity to ensure the long-term sustainability of agriculture, particularly for essential crops like potatoes.
