Advances in Breeding for the Development of New Potato Varieties
摘要
Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a vital food crop globally that is facing challenges such as climate change, evolving pest and disease pressures, and increasing demand and breeding efforts that play a crucial role in enhancing its agronomical traits. These things explore recent advancements in potato breeding techniques, including traditional methods, transgenic approaches, marker-assisted selection (MAS), genomic selection (GS), and genome editing (GE). Traditional breeding methods involve controlled cross-pollination to produce offspring with desired traits, while MAS accelerates the process by identifying genetic markers linked to desirable traits. GS leverages genomic data to predict plant performance, particularly for complex traits. Transgenic approaches introduce foreign genes to confer desirable traits, albeit with some controversy. Genome editing technologies like CRISPR-Cas9 offer precise alteration to the potato genome, hastening variety development. These advancements have significantly contributed to the creation of new potato types with superior features, such as disease resistance, yield, and nutritional content, ensuring global food security and sustainability. Continued research and investment in breeding technologies are crucial for further enhancing potato varieties to meet future challenges.
