Advances in Genotypic Selection for Potato Improvement
摘要
Potatoes are one of the most important food crops of the world, being rich in carbohydrates, protein, minerals, and vitamins, and is a staple of masses. Cultivated potato has an extremely narrow genetic base. Therefore, improvement of the crop requires creation of variation. The wild relatives of potato are diverse and sources of resistance and nutritional and bioactive compounds. Several accessions of potato are being conserved in different international centers such as CIP, Lima, Peru, USDA, USA, CPRI, India, etc. The basic potato improvement involves genotypic selection as the initial step. Different conventional breeding approaches and recent biotechnological tools are used for potato improvement.
