Advances in Abiotic Stresses Management in Potatoes
摘要
Potato tubers are rich in nutrients and have the potential to significantly contribute to human nutrition. However, biotic and abiotic stress conditions, along with climate change, negatively affect potato crop performance and yield, posing a serious threat to long-term potato production. Among these, abiotic stresses such as drought, temperature extremes, salinity, and nutrient imbalances present significant challenges to potato cultivation worldwide. Effective management measures are needed to mitigate the adverse effects of these stresses and ensure sustainable crop output. Several methods can be employed to reduce abiotic stress in potato production, including mulching, drip irrigation, plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), hormonal therapies, and nutrient management. Proper nutrient management is essential for enhancing the resilience of potato plants to abiotic stress. Potatoes require a balanced supply of macronutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) and micronutrients (calcium, magnesium, zinc) to support optimal growth and development. Nutrient deficiencies or imbalances can worsen the effects of abiotic stress, diminishing the plant’s ability to cope with unfavorable conditions. Other agronomic practices also help combat abiotic stress. Mulching is an effective technique that provides multiple benefits for managing abiotic stress in potato crops. Similarly, irrigation management practices, such as scheduling and drip irrigation, are beneficial for managing drought stress, providing a consistent and controlled water supply and increasing water use efficiency (WUE). PGPR are beneficial microorganisms that colonize plant roots and enhance growth through various mechanisms, including modulation of plant hormone levels, improved nutrient uptake, and induction of systemic resistance to abiotic stress. Hormonal treatments can be integrated into potato cultivation practices to enhance stress tolerance and improve tuber yield and quality under abiotic conditions. Effective management of abiotic stress in potato cultivation requires an integrated approach that combines nutrient management, mulching, drip irrigation, PGPR, and hormonal treatments. Each of these strategies contributes to enhancing the resilience of potato plants to environmental stressors, supporting sustainable crop production in the face of climate change and resource limitations. By adopting these practices, farmers can mitigate the impacts of abiotic stress, ensuring stable and high-quality potato yields.
