The increasing global demand for potatoes, with production reaching approximately 375 million tonnes in 2022, underscores the need for efficient and sustainable agricultural practices. Momentous producers, including China (95.5 million tonnes), India (56 million tonnes), and the United States (17.8 million tonnes), contribute significantly to meeting this demand, driven by factors such as population growth, dietary preferences, and the expansion of processed potato products. Integration of remote sensing (RS) and geographical information systems (GIS) is becoming essential for the enhancement of potato production and ensuring sustainability. Remote sensing technologies, including satellite imagery and drones, offer real-time monitoring of potato crops and provide critical data on soil moisture, plant health, and pest infestations. These technologies enable precise interventions, optimizing water usage and reducing the need for chemical inputs. GIS further enhances potato farming by integrating and analyzing spatial data, enabling site-specific management practices such as optimal planting, fertilization, and irrigation. The use of remote sensing in potato production has revolutionized traditional agricultural practices by enhancing precision and efficiency, leading to higher yields, reduced production costs, and improved environmental stewardship. For instance, monitoring plant health through indices like the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) allows for the timely detection of stress factors, ensuring early intervention and mitigating potential yield losses. Additionally, GIS contributes to mapping variations in soil properties and climatic conditions, facilitating better decision-making and resource management. Overall, the application of RS and GIS in potato farming represents a significant advancement in agricultural technology, making potato production more resilient, productive, and sustainable. These tools support the growing global demand for potatoes and promote environmentally responsible farming practices, ensuring the long-term viability of potato production worldwide.
