The role of the European Union (EU) in global governance is currently experiencing uncertainty. While European integration has undoubtedly been one of the greatest successes in history, recent international developments have highlighted several deficits in its functioning. Among the various issues undermining the EU's political (but also economic and social) resilience, the emergence of new global players, such as the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa)—which enlarged to new members thanks to their BRICS Plus strategy—certainly plays a significant role. This chapter, after analyzing the nature, evolution, and different perspectives on global governance of both the EU and the BRICS, focuses on some points that should be reconsidered in the near future—by the EU—to regain a more central role globally, and within the mechanisms of global governance. Drawing mainly from the most relevant literature on these topics, and considering that the EU currently appears in crisis—due to the recent pandemic, the situation in Ukraine, etc.—the main objective is to delve into approaches of European policies that seem outdated, especially concerning the relation with the above-mentioned emerging countries—which demand a reform of global governance—but also the EU’s understanding of democratic participation in decision-making processes.
