This chapter discusses the insertion of Latin America in the international scenario, focusing on the contribution of this region in the global governance scope and analyzing the articulations and processes concerning the role it can play in (re)visiting multilateralism and building a multipolar global order. As part of the system’s periphery, Latin America tends to be highly vulnerable and sensitive to international changes. Consequently, the international and regional cooperation strategies adopted by Latin American nations often reflect cycles influenced significantly by external variables – such as shifts in the global distribution of power or the emergence of new international economic crises. More recently, the region’s internal political-electoral cycles and the intergovernmental nature of its governanceRegional governance mechanisms have also greatly affected Latin America’s ability to present a coherent and aligned international insertion strategy.
