Curbing ‘inequality of opportunity’ is one of the central themes of the Sustainable Development Agenda that pledges to “leave no one behind” and cuts across various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and targets (The United Nations, 2020). While the SDG 10 is entirely devoted to “reducing inequalities”—including Target 10.3 that calls to “ensure equal opportunity and reduce inequalities of outcome, by eliminating discriminatory laws and practices and promoting appropriate legislation, policies and actions in this regard”. Various other SDGs and relevant targets such as SDG 1: “No Poverty,” SDG 2: “Zero Hunger,” SDG 3: “Good Health and Wellbeing,” SDG 4: “Quality Education,” SDG 5: “Gender Equality,” SDG 6: “Clean Water and Sanitation,” SDG 7: “Affordable and Clean Energy,” and SDG 8: “Decent Work and Economic Growth” relate to inequality of opportunity in the sense that these address either to reducing the outcomes of ‘Inequality of Opportunity’ (IOp) or to improving on conditions creating it.
