When We Love (or Hate) Ideas Too Much: Love (or Hate) of Ideas as Impediments to Critical Thinking
摘要
There are many impediments to critical thinking. Two of the most serious impediments are love for and hatred of ideas. This essay analyzes love of and hatred for ideas—what are their structures and how do they impede critical thinking? Love of ideas is analyzed in terms of stories of love; intimacy, passion, and commitment toward ideas; and the ecological context in which the ideas occur. Hatred is analyzed similarly but more briefly. It is concluded that unless we become willing to examine our feelings toward ideas and become more flexible in these feelings, we risk conflicts that escalate and ultimately may lead us to the brink.
