This study explores using robots to assist inexperienced individuals in moderating recreational rehabilitation sessions, typically led by speech-language pathologists. Recreational rehabilitation helps improve language skills and reduce social isolation but requires careful moderation, preparation, and participant engagement. To address these challenges, the authors developed a system enabling nursing staff to control a communication robot’s speech timing remotely. Trials showed that this system reduces the moderator’s burden while maintaining participant interaction levels comparable to human moderators. By analyzing utterance content, the study found increased participant contributions and reduced moderator workload, confirming the system’s effectiveness.
