Fourteen dogs with spontaneous oral cavity melanoma were treated with boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) mediated by boronophenylalanine (BPA). Two methods of BPA infusion were studied: intravenous and via a tumor feeding arteria. Irradiation was performed at a nuclear reactor with a thermal neutron beam of 0.9 × 109 n/cm2 s. Complete tumor regression was achieved in 78% of the animals. Metastasis was observed in all the dogs some period later after BNCT. Metastases free period for the dogs with complete tumor regression was from 90 to 300 days. The mean life span of the dogs with complete tumor regression was 241 ± 106 days.
