A significant industrial core technology development project, “Development of a system capable of performing a proton linear accelerator-based BNCT (A-BNCT) within 1 hour therapeutic time” was initiated by Dawonsys Co. Ltd. and DAWONMEDAX CO., LTD.supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and, Energy (MOTIE) in May 2016. The partner organizations were Pohang Accelerator Laboratory, Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, Korea Basic Science Institute, Gachon University, and Gachon University Gil Medical Center. The installation of the A-BNCT system (10 MeV, 4 mA) was initiated at Songdo in Incheon in 2017. The capability of A-BNCT modality has been continuously improved depending on the escalated power and non-clinical trials have been performed well. The A-BNCT modality was selected as an innovative medical modality by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS). A-BNCT is a five and a half year project, which was finished successfully. An investigational new drug (IND) application for a BNCT clinical trial was submitted in December 2021. A research center for the BNCT clinical trial was approved thanks to great administrative efforts. After IND approval of MFDS, the clinical trial will start to validate a therapeutic neutron irradiation device, treatment planning system (TPS), and a boron drug. The participating organizations of a multicenter clinical trial for recurrent high-grade glioma are Gachon University Gil Medical Center, the National Cancer Center, and the Severance Hospital.
