This chapter explores the dynamic development of Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESE) within Australian—specifically New South Wales (NSW) and environmental education centres (EECs) within the NSW Department Education. It chronicles the development of ESE policy and the halcyon days of supporting structures before a slow demise—mirrored in the social and political spheres engulfed by the tentacles of neoliberalism. It covers global, national and state, councils, networks, statements/policies and frameworks. E.g. the NSW School EE Policy, the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative (AuSSI), the United Nations Decade for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals. The inseparability of educational change and political, economic and social change reveals interconnectivity—systems thinking writ large. Many reoccurring themes, tensions and synergies collide and dissipate. Some of these—the waxing and waning of ESE favour, bureaucratic and political hampering and advancement, the neutral chair versus a more committed action-oriented approach. Other themes that are constant, or build throughout, include the battle between entrenched interests versus the need for change based on environmental science, and the interplay of time-passing, politics and bureaucratic support and resistance in the development of environmental policies and structures, in addition to the importance of sustained public involvement and committed action.
