Sustainable Strategies and Innovative Solutions for Protecting Blue Sky and Blue Water to Enhance Environmental Health
摘要
Sustainability is crucial for addressing global environmental challenges, including water scarcity. In India, over 60% of irrigation and 85% of drinking water depend on groundwater, which is being rapidly depleted due to over-extraction. Despite receiving around 4000 billion cubic metres of rainfall annually, inadequate rainwater drainage systems hinder effective utilization. This chapter proposes a solution combining innovative and conventional methods: permeable pavements. These pavements, applied in roadways, parking lots, and other areas, allow rainwater to percolate through, replenishing underground water tables. This process involves excavating areas to create stable base layers that collect and direct excess water underground. Proper materials are selected for construction, enhancing water management efficiency. Additionally, a system named WaterVaulter, equipped with sensors, monitors and manages subterranean water reserves, ensuring the safe transfer of stored water through pipelines to a central tank with filtration. By incorporating permeable pavements into urban planning, this approach promotes groundwater recharge, addresses water scarcity, and fosters eco-friendly urban environments aligned with natural water cycles, thereby contributing to sustainable development and environmental health.
