A southern Iraq’s natural watercourses encompass diverse ecosystems, rich in both macro- and microhabitats that support a range of fauna and flora. However, rapid urbanization and industrialization have led to significant air and water pollution, degrading the quality of both. Air pollutants in the region stem from vehicle emissions (due to traffic and maritime congestion), industrial activities (factories, power plants, and the petrochemical industry), construction and urban development (dust and particulate matter), and natural sources (sea spray and biogenic emissions). Water pollutants enter aquatic systems through industrial discharges (waste effluents and thermal pollution), urban and agricultural runoff (stormwater, sewage overflows, nutrient pollution, pesticides, and herbicides), marine activities (oil spills and ballast water discharges), household and urban waste (solid waste and chemicals, including pharmaceuticals), and atmospheric deposition (airborne pollutants). This chapter focuses on the two most pressing environmental concerns in southern Iraq—air and water pollution—and their connection to achieving a higher environmental standard of living for current and future generations. Addressing the various sources and types of pollutants will provide critical insight into potential blue sky and blue water mitigation strategies. These strategies include regulation and enforcement, sustainable urban planning, technological innovations, public awareness, and education. This review seeks to increase awareness of the environmental hazards of air and aquatic pollution, highlighting their effects on human health and overall ecosystems. It also proposes environmental policies to control pollution costs, enhance energy efficiency and conservation, and diversify energy supplies. Additionally, this review outlines strategies for preserving water resources and biodiversity, minimizing environmental impact, and reducing emissions’ impact on the climate. Steps are also provided to ensure nothing goes to waste and whatever is left is either reused or recycled.
