Future Directions for Farmers About Soil Health in Horticultural Crops

The future success of horticultural crop production depends on a strategy to integrate sustainable land management including soil health assessment, vegetable and fruit cultivation practices, climate adaptation, and resilience to environmental aspects. The chapter examines the critical role of soil health in sustaining horticultural crops, namely vegetables and fruit crops, focusing on crop productivity, environmental sustainability, and overall food security. Very recently, soil health has been defined by the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS in Towards a Definition of Soil Health, 2020) as “the ability of the soil to sustain the productivity, diversity, and environmental services of the terrestrial ecosystem”. Soil health is related to the crucial role of soil chemical, physical, and biological properties to support crop growth and ecosystem services. These main properties include soil physical, chemical, and biological properties to sustain the productivity of horticultural crops. Soil physical properties include texture, structure, bulk density, and water-holding capacity, while chemical properties cover pH, soil organic C, various nutrient contents and balances, soil exchange capacity, toxic ions, and biological properties referred to as microbe types and population, and respiration. The integrated sustainable soil management practices to enhance soil health in horticultural cultivation include implementing various technologies such as raised beds, plastic mulch, organic manure, rotation/cover crops, and mound/small terraces while minimizing land degradation. These technologies should continuously be used as guidance for smallholders (horticultural farmers) as the key players in maintaining crop yield and soil health. The focus can be evaluated by providing the test kits/tools that can enhance farmers’ ability to monitor and manage future soil health in a more targeted site and efficient manner. Overall, this chapter aims to guide farmers, extension officers, researchers, and policymakers in implementing soil health practices for horticultural crops. Examining current practices and envisioning future goals for sustainable soil management ensure the resilience and productivity of horticultural systems in facing modern agricultural dynamics and climate changes.
