Many different factors can influence a person’s decision to migrate to a different country. In order to understand the extent to which a country’s political environment influences migration, we study the effect of democracy on global migration by constructing a network of international migration flows in 2010 and 2015 and overlaying the Economist’s Democracy Index data onto each country. Our network consists of countries as nodes and migration flows as edges, weighed using both raw number of migrants and percentage of origin population. We find results that imply migrants tend to migrate towards countries with higher democracy indexes, and that countries of lower democracy index tend to push migrants towards countries of higher democracy index.
