The opening chapter tries to provide to the readers a first understanding of the core concepts of the volume—eg. legal segmentation in the field of employment law—and an overview how the chapters of this volume contribute to its clarification. Global North-generated employment law often links legal advantages to the full-time norm and seniority. It does not cover informal work and, moreover, systematically excludes or disadvantages women, but also other labour market ‘outsiders’ from full protection. This is why it is particularly inappropriate to countries of the Global South, with their labour market conditions and work cultures.
