Impact of Commercial Activities on the Marine World

Maritime transport is crucial for global trade and economy, with four markets: newbuilding, freight, demolition, sale and purchase. It reduces business costs and impacts living standards and livelihoods. Over 150 countries have thousands of merchant ships handling cargo, and millions of commercial fishing vessels operate. The maritime sector includes transportation, recreation, cruising, commercial fishing, naval operations, commercial ports, sports, aquaculture, and marine energy sources. Oil harms fur-bearing mammals and birds by destroying their insulating and water repellent properties, leading to hypothermia and exposure to harsh elements. Anthropogenic underwater noise has been observed to exert negative pressure on a variety of taxa. Commercial fishing vigorously affects the benthic zone of the sea. Marine species are unable to communicate because the frequency range is limited by noise from other commercial activities. The oceans are home to diverse resources, including minerals, oil, gas, chemicals, and fisheries, all of which are essential for the survival and development of modern civilizations. Ocean pollution frequently affects marine life. For example, oil spills can trap and drown marine life by seeping into their gills. It may be impossible for seabirds to fly or care for their young if oil seeps into their feathers. If crude oil doesn't kill an animal, it can cause cancer, alter its behaviour, or prevent it from reproducing. Marine radiation is the presence and impact of ionizing radiation in ocean environments. This radiation can come from natural sources like cosmic rays and elements in the Earth, as well as human activities such as nuclear power and waste disposal. It can influence marine ecosystems and organisms at different levels in the food chain, potentially leading to the buildup and concentration of radioactive substances in living organisms. This book chapter briefly discusses different commercial activities, sources and impacts of radioactive materials on ocean and marine life.
