The protection of Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) from cyber threats is of paramount importance in upholding the stability of a nation. The interdependencies within the CNI sector can result in a significant impact if a successful attack occurs. Such an attack has the potential to initiate a ripple effect, leading to cascading failures for the entire nation. Therefore, the protection of CNI is of utmost significance. The recent successful cyber-attacks on the CNI highlight the need of improving the protection mechanism of these vital establishments. This article explains the complex threat dynamics of CNI and highlights the limitations of existing cybersecurity solutions. We propose a set of proactive cyber security strategies for enhancing the protection of CNI from contemporary cyber-attacks.
